National Sign, Southern Division, has produced a fair number of notable signs. Southern Division Sales manager Jose Zamberlin gets the job done, much to the approval and delight of our satisfied clients.

From the Los Angles Sentinal:

Mel’s Fish Market, the fabled “You Buy, We Fry” fried fish emporium that has been a staple of the Crenshaw district for more than two decades now, is making a change. Started by entrepreneur and neighborhood “father figure,” George Powell, the business has catered to the discriminating Southland palate with a wide variety of fish

A great old sign, still Mel’s was do for a “re-do!”

offerings ranging from whiting, to red snapper, to colossal tiger shrimp and everything in between.

Image You may remember seeing their familiar Mel’s Fish sign at their former Crenshaw Boulevard location or at their current location at S.E. corner of Jefferson Ave. and Buckingham Road, between La Brea and Crenshaw boulevards. Patrons can now get ready for a whole new and improved Mel’s Fish Market and a brand new logo. (Show before and after images with captions)

“We listened carefully to our customers and we wanted to respond in the biggest way possible,” remarked Georgette Powell, Mel’s Fish Market’s Owner and daughter of the restaurant’s founder. In response to changing tastes and the public’s movement toward lower salt, more health conscious diets, Ms. Powell stated emphatically “ we love our customers and we want them to enjoy the very best, so it didn’t make sense for us to change our menu without upgrading and modernizing our facility, giving our customers the best imaginable dining experience along with the best tasting, healthiest food possible.”

Mel’s Fish Market is remodeling and during their renovation which begins on Thursday, October 25, they will be offering their same world class food products from a mobile frying/broiling truck set up in the parking lot of their familiar Jefferson and Buckingham location.

Lucky patrons who visited the restaurant on this past weekend were treated to a rare half price sale. Once word spread, diners from around the Southland flocked to get their favorite seafood treats for 50 percent off. Call Mel’s at 323-735-7220 for more information.

What is an LED?

An LED (Light Emitting Diode) is an electronic semi-conductor that when turned on, converts electric energy into light. One way LEDs differ from incandescent light bulbs is LEDs have no filament to burn outmeaning LEDs can last for 10,000 hours or more. They are also far more efficient, producing substantially more light per watt than incandescent bulbs. Other advantages of LEDs are:

- Color: LEDs use no color filters like traditional lighting, thereby keeping costs down

- Shock resistant: LEDs are a solid state component making them difficult to damage

- On/Off time: LEDs produce light very quickly. Typically LEDs achieve full brightness in a less than a microsecond, giving them an incredible response time

- Cool light: An LED will radiate almost no heat that can damage adjacent materials. Excess energy is dissipated as heat through the base of the LED

- Size: LEDs are small in size, allowing them to be easily populated into face panels (in our industry)

- Cycling: LEDs are perfect for frequent on-off cycling, which cause traditional lighting to fail

- Low toxicity: An LED contains no mercury, thereby making them safe for the environment

In The Sign industry, one or more LEDs will make up a pixel. Typically, LEDs are red or amber for monochrome units and a combination red, green and blue for color displays. It is also important to keep in mind differences in quality when it comes to LEDs. There are literally hundreds of LED manufacturers making a wide range of diodes, some are first-rate, others are poorly manufactured which usually result in diodes lasting only 25,000 to 50,000 hours. In order to build a top of the line product, you need to start with top of the line components. Make sure your display manufacturer is providing only superior LEDs.

LED, which put the ‘green’ in green technology concerning signs, are experiencing new price drops. These drops in prices are making the full color message boards screens much more affordable for smaller and mid sized businesses. Sign sales are up in all areas thus affected, including channel letters, more and more of which are going to LED lighting.

“Prices of LED lighting products are estimated to drop by 15-20% each year amid increasing competition in the market as vendors reduce prices to gain market share. Prices of LED lighting products are expected to fall to one-third of current prices by 2015.” Siu Han, Taipei; Willie Teng, DIGITIMES
